The Aghanashini Vedavathi River Linking Project has recently come under scrutiny from UNESCO, which advised the Indian government in March 2026 to strictly adhere to international conservation norms. The core of the conflict lies in the project’s potential impact on the Western Ghats, a globally recognised biodiversity hotspot and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

UNESCO has flagged serious concerns regarding several high profile environmental and heritage issues globally. UNESCO has advised the Government of India to strictly adhere to the World Heritage Convention 1972 regarding the proposed Aghanashini Vedavathi river linking project.

The organisation’s intervention follows concerns that the project could disrupt the ecological balance of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and global biodiversity hotspot…

Key Points of Conflict

  1. UNESCO stressed that any infrastructure project in such ecologically fragile zones must comply with the World Heritage Convention (1972). The organisation noted that member states have a fundamental responsibility to protect natural heritage sites from development that disturbs environmental balance.
  2. The Aghanashini is one of India’s few remaining free flowing rivers, largely undammed and free from significant industrial pollution. Its estuary is also a designated Ramsar Site
  3. Activists, led by advocate Ravindra Naik, submitted a memorandum to UNESCO highlighting that the project is “unscientific” and could disrupt the natural hydrology of the region. They argue it threatens biodiversity and the water security of local communities..

The project is part of India’s National Perspective Plan for inter-basin water transfer

  1. Divert approximately 35 TMC ft aks thousand million cubic feet of water from the surplus, west flowing Aghanashini River to the water scarce, east flowing Vedavathi River.
  2. The primary goals are drought mitigation, enhanced agricultural productivity and securing drinking water for the arid Chitradurga basin and surrounding rural communities in Karnataka.
  3. : As of March 2026, the project is in its initial stages, facing significant public opposition with over 25,000 signatures sent to the Central Water Board. ..

Public Opposition & Protests :

The project faces massive resistance from local communities and environmentalists

  1. Approximately 25,000 signatures opposing the river diversion have been sent to the Central Water Board through Signature Campaign
  2. In January 2026, religious leaders, including the Swarnavalli Mutt seer, and local legislators led a massive rally in Sirsi, passing resolutions to drop the project through Public convention
  3. Critics argue the diversion of 35 TMC ft of water will destroy the Aghanashini Estuary (a Ramsar Site) and impact over 7,500 families who depend on traditional livelihoods like Kagga rice cultivation..
