Ashwini Bhide , First Female BMC Commissioner

Ashwini Bhide, a 1995-batch IAS officer, has been appointed as the Municipal Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as of 31 March 2026 , Widely recognized as Metro Women for her leadership in the Mumbai Metro Line 3 project and the Coastal Road project… She became the first woman to head the civic body in its 154 year history…

Appointment Details :

1. She took over from Bhushan Gagrani, who retired on the same day,  
2. Ashwini Bhide is expected to serve a full term until 2030 ,In addition to leading the BMC, she continues to hold charge as the Managing Director of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL)..
3. Her appointment was finalised after detailed discussions between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde..
4. Ashwini Bhide earned the nickname “Metro Woman of Mumbai” for her decisive leadership in implementing Mumbai Metro Line 3  which is the city’s first underground metro corridor. She is notably credited for reviving and advancing the project despite environmental controversies surrounding the Aarey car shed. 

Background of Ashwini Bhide

1. Prior to this appointment, she served as Additional Chief Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO)
2. She previously served as Additional Municipal Commissioner at the BMC (2020–2024), where she played a critical role in managing the city’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic
3.  Her extensive career includes leadership roles in Nagpur and Sindhudurg zilla parishads and as Additional Metropolitan Commissioner at the MMRDA..
4. Her appointment marks a significant milestone for gender representation in Mumbai’s governance..
