Asteroid 2026 GD is currently in the news as it makes an exceptionally close but safe flyby of Earth today, April 9, 2026 , it is a house sized space rock , Although the asteroid’s path brings it significantly closer to our planet than the Moon but experts at NASA confirm there is zero risk of impact..
Details of the Flyby:
- Approximately 156,000 miles (251,000 kilometres) from Earth. For comparison, the Moon orbits at an average distance of 239,000 miles, meaning 2026 GD will pass well inside the lunar orbit
- Estimated to be nearly 54 feet which is arround 16.5 metres wide, roughly the size of a typical house.
- Not classified as a “potentially hazardous object” Objects must typically exceed 460 feet in size and pass within much closer proximity to be considered a major threat..
What Reseacher says about Flyby

Even though 2026 GD poses no danger, NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office and the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) monitor it to
- High-precision tracking helps scientists better predict the future paths of this and other asteroids
- These flybys serve as real-world tests for global observatory networks and new technology like the Vera C. Rubin Observatory.
- Close passes allow astronomers to gather data on the composition and rotation of small near-Earth objects (NEOs).
Scientists are using this flyby to refine orbital models and test planetary defense tracking systems..for More innovation & Technology News visit here
