The BA.3.2 COVID-19 variant, informally nicknamed “Cicada” is currently being monitored by global health agencies due to its rising presence in wastewater and clinical samples across over 23 countries as of late March 2026..
The nickname was coined because the lineage or descended linked from the 2021-2022 BA.3 branch , appeared to remain “underground” or at extremely low levels for nearly four years before suddenly reemerging with a massive profile of new mutations in late 2025 and early 2026..
About Cicada
- It carries an unusually high number of genetic changes which is estimated between 70 and 75 mutations , mostly on the spike protein.
- Because it is so genetically distinct from the recently dominant JN.1 strains, it shows a significant potential for “immune escape” meaning it can more easily bypass protection from prior infections or the 2025–2026 vaccine formulations.
Global Presence:
- Detected in wastewater surveillance across at least 29 states of USA and several clinical cases, though it still represents a small fraction which is < 1% of total national cases.
- Showing more rapid growth in regions in Europe like Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands, where it has accounted for up to 30% of sequenced cases in some areas.
- Health authorities are maintaining surveillance, but no widespread outbreak or significant spike has been reported in the India as of March 31, 2026..
