India Withdraws Bid to Host COP33 Summit

India has officially withdrawn its bid to host the COP33 UN Climate Summit in 2028. The decision was communicated to the chair of the Asia-Pacific Group on April 2, 2026, through a formal letter from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) ,This move follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s high-profile proposal to host the event made during COP28 in Dubai in 2023..

Reasons for Withdrawal

1. The official letter cited a review of national commitments scheduled for the year 2028 as the primary reason for stepping back.
2.  Analysts suggest India wanted to avoid the additional pressure that hosting a summit would bring, especially as it would involve presiding over the Global Stocktake (GST) process.
3. There is speculation that the government is focusing resources on other big-ticket events, such as the 2030 Commonwealth Games bid for Ahmedabad.
4. The ongoing US-Iran conflict has reportedly led nations to prioritise short term energy security through traditional fuels over long-term climate targets.

1. India’s withdrawal leaves South Korea as the only other nation to have officially expressed interest in hosting COP33, though their national government has yet to submit a formal bid.
2. Experts from the Satat Sampada Climate Foundation have called the decision a “strategic missed opportunity” to champion the Global South and showcase India’s renewable energy achievements.
3. Despite this, India remains committed to its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), including targets for 60% non-fossil fuel power capacity by 2035..
