The Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary (CWLS) in Andhra Pradesh has been featured in several recent news reports highlighting critical conservation milestones and ecological surveys , this sanctuary plays a vital role in protecting the eggs of the Olive Ridley turtle particularly on Hope Island…
Conservation Efforts at Coringa

- the sanctuary uses specific strategies to protect these turtles, which are listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972
- Officials primarily use the in-situ method, which involves protecting the eggs in their natural nesting sites on the beach rather than moving them.
- Once the eggs hatch after approximately six weeks, the hatchlings are collected and released safely into the sea.
- On March 26, 2026, alone, over 585 hatchlings were released. Wildlife officials reported the successful conservation of nearly 20,000 Olive Ridley turtle eggs on Hope Island as of March 27, 2026
- Night beats and fencing are used to protect nests from natural predators like jackals, birds and dogs.
- To prevent adult turtles from being crushed or entangled, authorities encourage the use of Turtle Excluder Devices (TED) in fishing nets and restrict mechanized boat operations during the nesting season
- These turtles are the smallest and most abundant sea turtles globally but are classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. They migrate thousands of kilometres from the Indian Ocean to the Bay of Bengal every year between December and March to lay eggs. While the largest mass nesting known as Arribada occurs at Gahirmatha in Odisha, the sandy stretches of Coringa serve as a crucial secondary habitate ..
- The Andhra Pradesh government proposed a satellite launching facility on Hope Island as part of a “Space City” project, sparking discussions about balancing infrastructure with the sanctuary’s ecological sensitivity..
Key Nesting Sites :
The Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary encompasses two major nesting destinations:
- Hope Island , it is a 16-km-long sand spit off the Kakinada coast that acts as a natural barrier and a critical breeding area.
- Sacramento Island is another important site within the sanctuary’s jurisdiction used for annual breeding
