As of March 28, 2026, the Damanganga River remains a focal point of environmental regulation and parliamentary debate. Recent reports highlight both ongoing technical interventions and significant enforcement actions against industrial polluters ,
Industrial Pollution Control in Gujarat :
The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) enforce strict environmental standards for industries in the Vapi industrial cluster and the Union Territory of DNH & DD
- industries in Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu that generate trade effluents are required to achieve ZLD (Zero Liquid discharge ) by reusing treated water within their premises.
- GPCB uses the “Polluter Pays” principle, issuing closure notices and imposing Environmental Damage Compensation (EDC) on violating units
- for Seasonal Action Plans targeted strategies are used to manage risks year-round like Winter Action Plan use Stricter emission controls due to low atmospheric dispersion & Monsoon Action Plan will Focus on preventing water contamination through stormwater management and safe chemical storage during heavy rains.
- The government organizes Environmental Clinics and Open House sessions to guide industries toward sustainable practices..
Sewage Infrastructure Projects:
Significant investments are being made to bridge the gap in domestic wastewater treatments
- National River Conservation Plan (NRCP) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti provides financial assistance for projects like Interception & Diversion (I&D) of raw sewage and the construction of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) on a cost-sharing basis.
- in Vapi Nagarpalika , Multiple STPs have been planned or constructed, including a 14 MLD plant at Namdha village and additional capacity in the tender stages to address a nearly 20 MLD treatment gap.
- at Present Daman Operates a 4.21 MLD STP with further capacity expansions to ensure 100% treatment.
- Local bodies have been instructed to implement in-situ bioremediation (Local Remediation) for drains discharging into the river where permanent STP construction is still in progress
Monitoring & Conservation
- The Vapi Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) is equipped with Online Continuous Effluent Monitoring Systems (OCEMS) to track discharge quality in real-time.
- CPCB monitors the river at 16 locations under the National Water Quality Monitoring Programme to assess the impact of these interventions.
- Proposals have been initiated for a Biodiversity Park along the river to restore the local ecosystem
