The Meghalaya Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, officially extended the term of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) by six months on March 16, 2026. Originally scheduled to expire on April 18, 2026, the council’s tenure is now extended until October 18, 2026..

Reason of Extension :

  1. The decision followed the indefinite postponement of the GHADC elections, which were originally set for April 10, 2026. This delay was triggered by significant unrest and a “volatile law and order situation” in the Garo Hills region..
  2. Clashes broke out over the participation of non-tribal candidates in the council elections. In West Garo Hills, violence led to at least two deaths and multiple injuries, tensions escalated after a Meghalaya High Court ruling quashed a GHADC notification that had made Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificates mandatory for candidates. Local groups have strongly asserted that the council should remain exclusively representative of tribal communities to safeguard indigenous rights and customs…
  3. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong stated the extension provides time for the District Council and the state government to hold consultations and decide if existing electoral rules should be amended to disallow non-tribal participation…

Output of Clash :

Chief Executive Member (CEM) , Albinush R. Marak resigned on March 16, 2026, citing “moral grounds” just hours before a scheduled no-confidence motion. Dhormonath Ch. Sangma (MDC from Naguapra) was subsequently elected as the new CEM, backed by 21 members..

The Meghalaya Congress has opposed the blanket six-month extension, arguing that polls should have proceeded in the 27 constituencies unaffected by violence, rather than a total deferment and The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) maintains that the extension is a “landmark” decision necessary to ensure regional stability and allow for a consensus-based solution regarding candidate eligibility… for More State News visite here
