Professor Kaveh Madani was named the winner of the 2026 Stockholm Water Prize on March 18, 2026, often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Water” The announcement was made at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris ahead of World Water Day.

At age 44, Madani is the youngest recipient in the prize’s 35-year history. He is also the first United Nations official and first former politician to receive the honour , The Stockholm Water Foundation recognized his work for integrating game theory and decision analysis into water resources models , He is widely known for developing the concept of “water bankruptcy,” which describes water crises as chronic, systemic failures rather than temporary shortages. The committee highlighted his ability to link water science with policy and diplomacy, often under significant political risk.
His Background :
- He currently serves as the Director of the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH).
- He is a Research Professor at the City University of New York (CUNY) CREST Institute.
- Madani formerly served as the Deputy Head of Iran’s Department of Environment before being forced into exile after being targeted by hardliners.
The formal award ceremony will be held in August 2026 during World Water Week in Stockholm, where he will receive the prize from King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.. For More Honors and awards visit here
