Lipulekh Pass Trade to Resume Between India and China

 Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand is scheduled to resume in June 2026 after a six-year hiatus , Border trade Route between India and China . The route was suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and heightened border tensions following the Galwan Valley clash..

Why Resumption Started :

1. The session typically runs from June to September, leveraging favourable Himalayan weather.
2. For the first time, traders will use a motorable road to the pass , it was completed in 2020, replacing traditional pack animals like mules and sheep, which is expected to significantly reduce travel time and costs..
3. Gunji has been designated as the primary trade mart while Dharchula will serve as the base camp for administrative formalities.
4. Facilities including State Bank of India (SBI) branches for currency exchange, customs offices, and medical support are being set up to facilitate operations.
5.  The decision follows high-level talks in August 2025 where both nations agreed to reopen three traditional passes that are  Lipulekh (Uttarakhand), Shipki La (Himachal Pradesh) and Nathu La (Sikkim)

Strategic and Geopolitical mutual benefits

1. The reopening is seen as a cautious step toward normalising economic ties and stabilising relations along the Line of Actual Control (LAC)..
2.  Nepal has officially protested the resumption, reiterating its claim that the Lipulekh-Kalapani-Limpiyadhura region is its sovereign territory under the 1816 Treaty of Sugauli.
3. The Ministry of External Affairs has rejected Nepal’s claims and stating India’s position is “consistent and clear” and that trade through the pass has existed since 1954.
