Climate Targets NDC 3.0 Goals Updated by India

On March 25, 2026, the Union Cabinet approved India’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for the period 2031–2035, This updated plan, often referred to as NDC 3.0, enhances India’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement..These revised targets will be communicated to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as part of India’s commitment to the Paris Agreement..

New Headline Targets for 2035

Compared to 2005 levels, India has committed to the following by 2035:

1. Reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 47% (up from the 45% target set for 2030).
2. Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity was increaded , Achieve 60% of cumulative installed electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources , it is up from the 50% target for 2030..
3. will Create an additional carbon sink of 3.5 to 4.0 billion tonnes of equivalent through increased forest and tree cover. UNFCCC

The government highlighted that India has already met several previous goals ahead of schedule likes

1. Electricity Capacity as of February 2026, non-fossil fuel sources already account for 52.57% of India’s installed capacity, surpassing the 2030 target early
2. Emissions intensity of GDP was reduced by 36% between 2005 and 2020.
3. These goals are designed to align with the “Viksit Bharat @ 2047” vision and the long-term target of reaching Net-Zero emissions by 2070.

NDC 3.0

Beyond numerical targets, the updated NDC 3.0 emphasizes:

1. Mission LiFE Which Promoting a “Lifestyle for Environment” to foster individual and community-led climate action.
2. Climate Resilience which Strengthening infrastructure and adaptation measures, including Mangrove restoration (MISHTI) and Heat Action Plans.
3. Global Leadership among worlds through Positioning India as a leading voice for the Global South by balancing development with sustainable growth.
