High-Resolution Pollution Mapping
its primary mission is to study ocean health, researchers have “unlocked” its hyperspectral capabilities to isolate emissions from individual industrial sites & specific highway corridors
- Using its Ocean Color Instrument (OCI), PACE can track pollution on a “neighborhood scale” with a spatial resolution of approximately 1 kilometre.
- The hyperspectral sensor detects unique spectral signatures of nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant from fossil fuel combustion. This allows scientists to distinguish distinct plumes of gas from nearby factories that were previously blurred together in satellite data.
- Unlike older systems that estimated pollution over large areas, PACE data allows for the direct identification of stationary emission sources like power plants, shipping facilities, and heavy-traffic interstates.
