Prosopis Juliflora was in news because recently , a special Division Bench of the Madras High Court issued a landmark set of 34 directions for the total eradication of Prosopis juliflora aka Seemai Karuvelam , from Tamil Nadu on March 18 2026. has severely depleted groundwater and displaced native flora across the state so the court declared “war” on this invasive species..

Key Directives & Project “Sezhumai Karuvoolam”
- The court launched Project Sezhumai Karuvoolam (Fertile Repository) to oversee the eradication and restoration process, Owners of private property must uproot these plants within 30 days. If they fail to do so, the district administration will remove them and recover the costs from the landowners.
- Collectors are appointed as the central authority to supervise mechanical uprooting on both public and private lands…
- The court appointed two retired judges Justice A. Selvam for Southern districts and Justice V. Bharathidasan for Northern districts , to monitor the progress of District Collectors…
- Native saplings must be planted within 30 days of removal. Private owners who participate will receive these saplings free of cost..
- The state is directed to maintain a dashboard and webpage to track removal progress, auctions and replanting efforts. A dedicated mobile number and social media link will allow the public to report sightings via geotagged photos..

The court’s decision, led by Justices N. Sathish Kumar and D. Bharatha Chakravarthy, highlighted the ecological damage caused by the plants like
- It is a major consumer of groundwater, leading to significant drops in water tables in arid regions.
- It creates a “monopoly” by destroying fertile grasslands and displacing native Indian trees.
- This comprehensive order comes after various court directions over the last 12 years failed to achieve total elimination due to a lack of inter departmental coordination..
