Scientists have recently discovered three previously unknown species of Rove beetles in Arunachal Pradesh, marking a significant milestone in documenting the Eastern Himalayan region’s rich biodiversity.
The study, published in the journal Soil Organisms on April 1, 2026, it highlights the state as one of India’s most ecologically diverse yet underexplored territories for insect life..
About Rove Beetles
- The new species were identified in a joint effort by researchers from Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), India & the University of Tübingen, Germany… these three beetles are also known as

- Megalopinus arunachalensis: Named after the state to honour its rich natural heritage.
- Megalopinus mithun: Named after the Mithun (Bos frontalis), the state animal of Arunachal Pradesh.
- Megalopinus micros: Named for its tiny size, measuring only about 1.9 mm
- these beetles, found in the Pakke Tiger Reserve and Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, inhabit leaf litter and decaying wood, where they function as predators and decomposers..
2) Rove beetles belongs to family Staphylinidae, are vital to forest health, acting as natural predators & decomposers that help maintain ecological balance..
Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein noted that such findings reinforce the urgent need to conserve the state’s pristine and fragile ecosystems..
