On March 30, 2026 , The Indian Navy officially received INS Sanshodhak Also known as Yard 3028, the fourth and final ship of the Survey Vessel (Large) (SVL) Project, it was built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) in Kolkata and its delivery marks the successful completion of a four ship contract signed in October 2018..

- it is the last vessel in its class, Sanshodhak joins its sister ships which are Sandhayak, Nirdeshak & Ikshak , which were commissioned between February 2024 and November 2025.
- GRSE delivered three frontline warships altogether to the Navy on the same day , these arethe frigate Dunagiri, the survey vessel Sanshodhak & the ASW shallow watercraft Agray.
- The vessel features over 80% indigenous content by cost, aligning with the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative..
Capabilities and Specifications:
Designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, the vessel is specialized for both hydrographic and oceanographic roles
- Full-scale coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys, mapping of port/harbor approaches, and determination of navigational channels
- Gathers oceanographic and geophysical data for both defense and civil applications.
- Fitted with a data acquisition system, Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and digital side scan sonar.
The induction of Sanshodhak which means “Researcher” , significantly enhances India’s Maritime Domain Awareness in the Indian Ocean Region. Beyond its primary survey duties, the vessel can also support Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions and limited combat roles if required.
