Astronomers Find Unusual Solar System

Astronomers have identified a peculiar planetary system around the star LHS 1903, it is located approximately 116 to 120 light-years away,it challenges established theories of how solar systems form. its “inside-out” configuration, which is the reverse of our own Solar System’s layout..

Why Unusual:

In our Solar System, rocky planets are close to the Sun while gas giants are farther out. The LHS 1903 system has a unconventional arrangement such as

1.  It consists of four planets a rocky inner planet, followed by two gas-rich “sub-Neptune” planets & finally a rocky outer planet.
2. The outermost planet, LHS 1903 e, is a rocky “super-Earth” roughly 5.79 times the mass of Earth. Its presence beyond gaseous planets defies standard models, as outer regions are typically cool enough to allow for thick gaseous atmospheres to form..
3. Scientists suggest the planets may have formed sequentially rather than all at once. Under this “inside-out” theory, by the time the final outer planet formed, the system had already run out of the gas vital for creating gaseous worlds
4. The system contains two rocky super-Earths, offering a unique opportunity to study how similar planets evolve in different parts of the same system. One of the rocky planets has an estimated surface temperature of 60°C, placing it within a range that could potentially support life.
5. The discovery was made by combining data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and the European Space Agency’s CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite (CHEOPS)
