In the 2025 World Air Quality Report released by Swiss firm IQAir on March 24, 2026, Pakistan was ranked as the world’s most polluted country. India moved to the sixth spot globally, dropping out of the top five for the first time since the rankings began eight years ago..

The report analysed PM2.5 which come under fine particulate matter levels across 143 countries.
- Pakistan : (Rank 1, Averaged 67.3 µg/m³, exceeding WHO guidelines by over 13 times )
- Bangladesh : (Rank 2 , Averaged 66.1 µg/m³)
- Tajikistan : (Rank 3, Averaged 57.3 µg/m³ )
- Chad : (Rank 4, Slipped from the top spot in 2024 to fourth place, though researchers noted this might be due to data gaps.
- Democratic Republic of the Congo : (Rank 5 , Averaged 50.2 µg/m³ )
- India : (Rank 6 , Recorded a national average PM2.5 concentration of 48.9 µg/m³, a slight 3% improvement from the previous year )
Worst pollution lists among Indian Cities
- Loni, India near Ghaziabad in UP , was named the world’s most polluted city with a PM2.5 level of 112.5 µg/m³.
- New Delhi remained the world’s most polluted capital city for the eighth consecutive year.
- All of the world’s 25 most polluted cities were located in India, Pakistan and China
- Five Indian cities: Loni, Byrnihat, Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Ula featured in the global top ten
Global position in this Index
- Cleanest City is Nieuwoudtville, South Africa, recorded the world’s cleanest air with a concentration of 1.0 µg/m³.
- Only 13 countries and territories (9%) met the WHO annual PM2.5 guideline of 5 µg/m³ having Standard compliance
- Increased wildfire activity in regions like North America contributed to declining air quality in areas that were historically cleaner..
