Celeste Satellites to Boost Navigation System by ESA

The European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched thefirst two satellites of its Celeste mission from the Māhia Peninsula in New Zealand on 28th March 2026, This launch marks the beginning of Europe’s first Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite navigation demonstration & aimed at complementing the existing Galileo syastems..

Launch Details of celeste Satellite

1. The satellites were launched aboard Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket , They are now in a quasi-polar Low Earth Orbit (LEO) at an altitude of approximately 510 km , The two satellites, Celeste IOD-1 and IOD-2, are CubeSats (12U and 16U) developed respectively by consortia led by GMV at Spain and Thales Alenia Space in France..

Mission Objectives of ESA

Celeste is designed as a Low Earth Orbit Positioning Navigation and Timing (LEO-PNT) demonstrator mission. Its primary goals include:

1. Acting as a “daughter mission” to Galileo, Celeste satellites orbit much closer to Earth than the existing Galileo constellation in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO)..
2. Due to their lower altitude, they can broadcast stronger signals that are more resistant to interference and can better penetrate “urban canyons” and indoor environments.
3. The mission will test signals in new frequency bands, including S-band and C-band, to improve accuracy and security against jamming and spoofing.
4.  The technology is expected to support future applications like autonomous vehicles, larscale IoT deployments and 5G/6G network synchronisation

This initial launch marks the start of an in orbit demonstration phase. ESA plans to expand the constellation to 11 satellites by 2027 to fully validate the multi layer navigation architecture before potentially moving toward a full operational system..
