India is set to host the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi in May 2026. Under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability “ India aims to address several critical global issues such as :
- Navigating consensus on the West Asia crisis such as involving Iran and regional fallout and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
- Deepening discussions on “de-dollarisation” and the use of local currencies for cross-border trade.
- Promoting Indian models like Aadhaar and UPI for adoption among member countries
- Advocating for urgent reforms to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to better represent contemporary realities.
- Establishing frameworks for green energy transitions that do not overburden developing economies in upcoming years
India officially assumed the BRICS presidency on January 1, 2026 succeeding Brazil. This is the first year India leads the expanded bloc, which now includes 11 members that are Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Indonesia, The outcomes of this May ministerial meeting will help shape the final documents for the main 18th BRICS Summit which isscheduled for September 9–10, 2026 in New Delhi..
