- The Snowy Owl and other added species are now classified as either “species in danger of extinction” or “species in need of coordinated international action”.
- Global Snowy Owl populations have declined by roughly one-third over the past 30 years in North America, Europe & Russia.
- While 2013 estimates placed the population at 200,000 but 2025 data suggests a much smaller population of 14,000 to 28,000 birds.
- to strengthen regional and global cooperation to protect the owls’ migratory paths and breeding grounds, which are increasingly threatened by climate driven changes in prey that is lemming availability..
The fate of the Snowy Owl is intrinsically linked to the Arctic lemming. Changes in snowmelt timing directly impact lemming numbers, when lemmings are scarce, Snowy Owls may skip breeding seasons entirely.
