Light Traped by Scientist in Ultra thin 40 Nanometre Layer

Researchers have successfully trapped infrared light within a structure just 40 nanometres thick over 1,000 times thinner than a human hair ,led by teams from the University of Warsaw and other Polish institutions, Researcher demonstrates that light can be confined in structures much smaller than its own wavelength..

Scientific Details about Research

1.  The researchers used molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2), a layered semiconductor with a much higher refractive index than common photonic materials like silicon because light travels roughly 4.5 times slower in MoSe2 than in air, allowing for extreme confinement..
2. They engineered a subwavelength grating an array of parallel strips spaced closer together than the wavelength of light. This allows the layer to act as a near-perfect mirror that holds light within its tiny volume…
3. they used molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) , a scalable technique allowed them to grow uniform films spanning several square inches while maintaining the 40 nanometre thickness

1. The structure intensifies light so effectively that it boosts the “third harmonic generation” effect by over 1,500 times, converting infrared light into visible blue light with record efficiency..

3.  The technology could lead to ultra sensitive biosensors capable of detecting single molecules or advanced night vision coatings for glasses and windshields..
