Rescue of 16 Indian Softshell turtles in Greater Noida on April 1, 2026 has once again brought India’s illegal wildlife trade into the spotlight. These turtles, aka Gangetic Softshell turtles (Nilssonia gangetica), are highly protected and were reportedly being smuggled to markets in Delhi for eventual international transit..

Recent Illegal Wildlife Trade of softshell turtle

  1. Police during a routine check in Jarcha intercepted a man on a scooter carrying 16 live turtles in a moving jute bag. The suspect identified as a resident of Panipatin haryana, had trapped them from local canals to sell in Delhi.
  2. In one of the year’s largest crackdowns, the Malkangiri Forest Division rescued 631 Indian Flapshell turtle from a pickup van. Seven individuals were arrested in this coordinated smuggling operation..
  3. Authorities seized a large consignment of turtles at the Patna Junction foiling a trafficking attempt via rail..

Wildlife Trade Economics and Risks of softshell turtle

 high demand in Southeast Asian markets, particularly in China and Nepal, for various purposes such as

  1.  Individual softshell turtles can fetch between ₹40,000 and ₹1 lakh on the international black market
  2. They are poached primarily for their meat, which is considered a delicacy & their bones, which are used in traditional medicine and soups.
  3.  In illegal markets, turtles with 20 claws are specifically targeted and can command prices of ₹1 lakh or more due to superstitious beliefs..

Conservation Status and Protection

  1. The Indian Softshell turtle is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, granting it the highest level of legal protection in India.
  2. The species is currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
  3. Possession or trade of these turtles can lead to a prison sentence of 3 to 7 years and a minimum fine of ₹25,000.
