- PFAS Compounds Includes a strict EU wide quality standard for the sum of 25 PFAS in surface waters including trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) & a similar standard for the 4 most harmful PFAS in groundwater
- The list now includes pharmaceuticals such as painkillers and antibiotics, microplastics, pesticides, bisphenols & antimicrobial resistance indicators.
- Stricter monitoring for a sum of 20 PFAS in groundwater was added to align with the Drinking Water Directive, which already mandated monitoring starting January 12, 2026.
Implementation Timeline
- Member States must integrate these new rules into their national laws by December 21, 2027.
- Nations are expected to meet revised standards for surface water by 2033.
- The final deadline for overall compliance with all new standards is set for 2039 with potential conditioned extensions available until 2045.
