A new satellite based analysis released on April 21, 2026 whuich shows Two Indian landfill , Jawahar Nagarin Hyderabad and Kanjurmarg in Mumbai , have been identified as global methane “super-emitters” in India ..

The report, titled “Spotlight on the Top 25 Methane Plumes in 2025: Landfills “ was published by the STOP Methane Project at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)…

India’s “Super-Polluters” are

  1. Secunderabad (Jawahar Nagar), Telangana has  Ranked 4th globally. It emits approximately 5.9 tonnes of methane per hour..
  2. Mumbai (Kanjurmarg), Maharashtra has Ranked 12th globally, releasing about 4.9 tonnes per hour..
  3.  A source emitting 5 tonnes of methane per hour has a short-term warming impact roughly equivalent to one million SUVs ..

Climate and Health Risks link with Methans

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, responsible for about 30% of global warming since pre-industrial times

  1. its heat traping capacity is 84 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period
  2.  Because these sites are near densely populated cities, researchers from UCLA’s Emmett Institute warned of significant public health risks ..
  3. Methane buildup is the primary driver behind frequent, toxic landfill fires seen in Indian cities..

About SWM Rules 2026

In response to worsening waste pollution, the Indian government notified new Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026, which came into effect on April 1, 2026

  1.  Waste must be separated into four streams at the source: Wet, Dry, Sanitary, and Special Care
  2.  The government aims to eliminate all legacy dumpsites by December 2026
  3.  A centralised digital portal has been launched to track waste flow and ensure compliance by bulk generators
  4.  Stricter penalties and Environmental Compensation (EC) are now in place for entities that manipulate compliance reports or fail to process waste responsibly

At Present India is the world’s 3rd largest methane emitter, it has notably not signed the Global Methane Pledge, focusing instead on internal initiatives like Gobar Dhan and the National Livestock Mission..
