About SWM Rules 2026
In response to worsening waste pollution, the Indian government notified new Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026, which came into effect on April 1, 2026
- Waste must be separated into four streams at the source: Wet, Dry, Sanitary, and Special Care
- The government aims to eliminate all legacy dumpsites by December 2026
- A centralised digital portal has been launched to track waste flow and ensure compliance by bulk generators
- Stricter penalties and Environmental Compensation (EC) are now in place for entities that manipulate compliance reports or fail to process waste responsibly
At Present India is the world’s 3rd largest methane emitter, it has notably not signed the Global Methane Pledge, focusing instead on internal initiatives like Gobar Dhan and the National Livestock Mission..
