The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) was awarded the 4th Gender Equality Mobilization (GEM) Award by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), it was Presented in Vienna, this recognition highlights the city’s innovative approach to combining women’s empowerment with sustainable waste management ..
Women-Led Waste Management
The award recognized the “Sustainable Cities” project, which includes key initiatives such as
- Deployment of over 200 women as electric auto-tipper drivers for door-to-door garbage collection
- Training and hiring formerly informal waste collectors, providing them with formal employment
- Utilizing electric vehicles for zero-emission waste collection, supported by a 500KwP floating solar power plant on the Sangam-Jagarlamudi reservoir for renewable energy.
- The initiative is part of the Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot (SCIAP), supported by UNIDO and the Global Environment Facility (GEF)
In addition to the UNIDO award, the GMC was recognized for high property tax collection in April 2026 and named a Super Swachh League City in July 2025..
