World’s First Quadruple Amputee Archer Champion-Payal Nag

In a historic moment for global para sports, Payal Nag became the world’s first quadruple amputee archer to win an international gold medal on April 4, 2026. The 18 year old from Balangir, Odisha, secured the title in the women’s compound open individual category at the World Archery Para Series in Bangkok..

In a thrilling all-Indian final,Payal Nag defeated her teammate and idol world No. 1 Sheetal Devi, with a narrow score of 139–136. This victory was particularly significant as it marked Nag’s debut in a senior international tournament…

Her Journey as Champion

1. Nag lost all four limbs at the age of five as per media due to a tragic electrocution accident.
2.  She was discovered by coach Kuldeep Vedwan , who also coached Sheetal Devi , after a video of her painting with her mouth went viral. In 2022, Vedwan brought her to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Sports Complex in Katra, Jammu, to train alongside her idol, Paralympic medalist Sheetal Devi…
3. Unlike Devi, who uses her feet, Nag uses a specialized prosthetic support on her right leg to stabilize the bow while drawing the string with her shoulder and mouth via a trigger mechanism
4.  In addition to her individual gold, Nag partnered with Sheetal Devi to win team gold in the women’s compound doubles event, helping India top the overall medal standings..

Her triumph is widely celebrated as a testament to resilience, having overcome significant adversity & limited resources to reach the summit of world para archery..

Her parents, Bijay and Janata Nag , both migrant laborers, initially struggled to provide the specialized care she needed. With the help of the District Collector, she was placed in the Parvatigiri Balniketan orphanage in Balangir in 2019, where she spent three years rebuilding her life..
