In a major scientific breakthrough on April 9 – 11, 2026, scientists in Kashmir successfully standardized the cultivation technology for Morchella mushrooms also known as Gucchi , under controlled conditions for the first time. This achievement at the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Srinagar, addresses a decades-old global challenge due to the mushroom’s complex life cycle..
Valuable Updates Regarding Morchella Mushroom
- The breakthrough was achieved by two independent teams at SKUAST-K. Dr. Tariq A. Sofi and PhD student Kamran Muneer succeeded in greenhouse conditions, while Dr. Vikas Gupta mastered the process in open fields.
- Locally known as Kangaech, these mushrooms are among the world’s most expensive, typically priced between ₹15,000 and ₹40,000 per kilogram. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who is also Pro Chancellor of the university, congratulated the team, calling it a “game changing breakthrough” for the region’s agri-economy and rural livelihoods..
