Prominent consumer rights activist and social worker Dijo Kappan passed away at the age of 68 on Friday, May 1, 2026. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Pala, Kerala, where he had been undergoing treatment for several months following a severe car accident in October 2025 , Kappan was widely regarded as a tireless advocate for the common citizen, particularly in the fields of consumer protection and anti-corruption..

- In 1988, he established the Centre for Consumer Education (CCE) to safeguard the rights of consumers and farmers.
- He led numerous Public Interest Litigations (PILs) against , Hikes in electricity charges and road tax , The waste management crisis in Kochi such as the Brahmapuram issue & Hazards caused by unauthorised advertisement boards on public roads..
- He fought a prolonged battle to simplify the bureaucratic insurance claim process for road accident victims.
- A familiar face in television debates, he was known for his vocal and principled stance on public policy and civil rights..
Personal & Political Life of Kappan ji
- A native of Edamattom near Pala, Kappan began his journey in student politics as a leader of the Kerala Student Congress (KSC)
- He served as the General Secretary of the Kerala University Union in 1982 and was a former State President of the KSC.
- He stepped away from active politics in 1998 to dedicate his life entirely to social activism and consumer advocacy.
- He is survived by his wife, Dr. Mini Kappen, and three children
