Justice Shri Mahesh Sharadchandra Sonak was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on January 9, 2026.

Jharkhand Governor Shri Santosh Kumar Gangwar administered the oath at Birsa Munda Mandap in Ranchi’s Lok Bhavan. Attendees included Chief Minister Hemant Soren, sitting High Court judges, judicial officers, bar members and senior officials. Justice Sonak took charge right after former Chief Justice Shri Tarlok Singh Chauhan retired on January 8 when he turned 62.
Appointment Process of Justice Mahesh sonak
The Supreme Court Collegium, led by CJI Surya Kant, recommended Sonak on December 18, 2025. The central government approved this recommendation on January 2, 2026. He is the 17th or 18th Chief Justice since the court was established in November 2000 under Article 217 of the Constitution. Background of Justice Mahesh Sonak
Born on November 28, 1964, Sonak attended Don Bosco High School in Panaji, Goa. He earned a science degree from Dhempe College and graduated at the top of his class with an LL.B. from M.S. College of Law. In May 2024, he was the first to register a living will in Goa. Expectations focus on improving judicial efficiency as caseloads continue to rise.
