Araku Old Seed Festival Empower Tribal Biodiversity

The 17th annual Old Seed Festival concluded on April 28, 2026, in Killoguda village, Araku Valley  ,locally known as Patha Vithanala Pandaga is in news ,Organised by the NGO Sanjeevini,  it serves as a critical national platform for conserving indigenous biodiversity and promoting natural farming among Adivasi communities or Tribal communities ..

Festival Highlights & Biodiversity Includes

1. Over 1,000 varieties of traditional seeds likes millets, pulses, tubers &medicinal herbs were showcased in earthen vessels and leaf containers..
2.  80 varieties of tuber seeds were displayed  by villagers from Gondivalasa ..
3. Farmers and seed saviours from six states like Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka & Maharashtra , gathered for seed exchange and knowledge sharing …
4. it featured notable conservators like Raimati Ghiuria  which is known as “Millet Queen of India” and Pangi Vineetha, an expert in organic farming ..

Why Cultural Traditions is famous

1. Tribal women led a vibrant procession through the village, carrying preserved seeds in painted earthen pots and bamboo baskets, it show attachment with nature and culture linked with it..
2. The celebrations were marked by Dhimsa dance and traditional drum ensembles, reinforcing the deep link between tribal culture and agriculture..
3. Visitors sampled traditional foods prepared from millets and wild leafy greens..

Conservation & Impact of festival

The festival’s primary goal is to protect the germplasm of native crops that are more resilient to climate change than modern hybrids ..
