SC Rules Conversion Ends Scheduled Caste Status

The Supreme Court of India reaffirmed that individuals converting from Hinduism, Sikhism or Buddhism to other faiths such as Christianity or Islam, forfeit their Scheduled Caste (SC) status , on March 24, 2026 ..

Ruling of SC

  1. The Court held that the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, it limits SC benefits to those practicing Hinduism, Sikhism, or Buddhism, rendering conversions to other faiths a cause for losing SC recognition.
  2.  Converted individuals can no longer access protections under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
  3. Holding a previous SC certificate does not maintain status, as eligibility depends on the religion practiced at the time of a claim, noted the Court.
