The Gujarat Legislative Assembly passed the Gujarat Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026 on march 24 2026 , making Gujarat the second state in India to adopt such a law after Uttarakhand. The bill, which consists of 201 pages was introduced by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and passed by a majority voice vote following a debate lasting over seven hours..
Core Provisions of the UCC Bill 2026
The legislation establishes a common legal framework for all citizens, irrespective of religion, in matters of personal law like two Case study Given belows :

1) For Marriage and Divorce case :
- Individuals cannot enter a second marriage while their spouse is alive , which show prohibition of Bigamy
- All marriages must be registered within 60 days. Failure to do so can result in a fine of up to ₹10,000.
- Sets standard and uniform grounds for the dissolution of marriage, including cases of sexual offences.
- Traditional or out of court divorces are invalidated and may carry a punishment of up to three years.
2) Live-in Relationships
- Partners must submit a declaration to a registrar. Non-registration can lead to up to three months of imprisonment or a fine of ₹10,000.
- If either individual is between 18 and 21 years old, their parents will be informed by the registrar.
- Children born out of registered live-in relationships will be recognised as legitimate and entitled to maintenance.
About Inheritance and Succession :
- The bill ensures equal inheritance rights for sons and daughters across all religious communities.
- Removes inheritance disqualifications based on physical or mental disabilities..
Exemptions and Scope of UCC 2026
- The code does not apply to Scheduled Tribes (ST) or specific groups whose customary rights are constitutionally protected.
- The law applies to all residents within the state and to residents of Gujarat currently living outside its territorial limits.
Political and Social Reaction within community :
- The Gujarat Government describes the law as a “historic step” rooted in constitutional principles under Article 44 to ensure gender justice and equality.
- The Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) opposed the bill, calling it “anti-minority” and “anti-Muslim ” and raised concerns that it was rushed ahead of local body polls and violated religious freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution…
