The Kashmir Tulip Project reached a major milestone in India’s drive for self-reliance by starting the supply of locally grown tulip bulbs and seeds to gardens nationwide. This initiative aims to reduce the country’s heavy dependence on imports from the Netherlands which currently costs India between ₹300 to 400 crore annually..
Strategic Moves Toward Self-Reliance

- The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST-K) has established a Centre of Excellence for Tulip and Bulb Production at the Mountain Crop Research Station (MCRS) in Sagam, Anantnag
- The project is being developed over 407 kanals which is approx. 50 acres, with a ₹8 crore grant from NABARD. It has already begun supplying indigenous bulbs to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar..
- Researchers have successfully developed protocols to produce high quality bulbs locally, aiming to achieve full self sufficiency and eventually position Jammu and Kashmir as a global exporter
Tulip Festival 2026

- The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar opened on March 16, 2026, nearly 10 days ahead of schedule due to warmer-than-usual February temperatures.
- A record 1.8 million tulips across 70 to 75 varieties are currently on display and attracting thousands of visitors daily.
- Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who inaugurated the festival, emphasized that indigenous bulb production will save foreign exchange and provide a profitable alternative for local farmers..
- Beyond self-reliance, the garden itself recognised as Asia’s largest drives regional tourism, attracting nearly 9 lakh visitors annually and supporting local industries like handicrafts and hospitality..
