About Shyam Krishna Varma :

- Pandit Shyamji Krishna Varma (1857–1930) was a formidable Indian revolutionary, lawyer and journalist who pioneered the freedom struggle from abroad. he was Born in Mandvi, Gujarat ..
- he became a central figure in awakening a “new consciousness” for Indian independence among students in Europe
- An exceptional scholar of Sanskrit, he was the first non-Brahmin to be conferred the title of “Pandit” by the Pandits of Kashi in 1877.
- He was the first Indian graduate to receive an M.A. from Balliol College, Oxford and was later appointed as an Assistant Professor of Sanskrit there.
- He became the first Indian “Bar-at-law” at the Inner Temple and served as the Diwan aka Chief Minister , for several princely states in India, including Ratlam and Junagadh..
Revolutionary Hub in London
Dissatisfied with British interference in Indian states, Varma returned to England in 1897 to fight for Swaraj (self-rule)..
- In 1905, he founded India House in London as a student hostel and headquarters for revolutionary activities. It became a meeting point for radical nationalists like Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and Madam Bhikaiji Cama.
- He established this organization to promote Indian self-governance through propaganda and cooperation among nationalists in Britain.
- He edited this monthly journal to spread nationalist ideas, famously using the motto “Resistance to aggression is not simply justified, but imperative”
- Shyamji Krishna Varma died in Geneva, Switzerland, on 30 March 1930. His last wish was for his ashes to be returned to a free India.
- In 2003, then CM Narendra Modi fulfilled this wish by bringing the ashes of Varma and his wife, Bhanumati, back to India, 73 years after his death.
- A grand memorial, Kranti Teerth, was built in his birthplace known as Mandvi. The complex features a replica of the original India House and houses the urns of their ashes.
