The Vanghmun Success Story
- Located at an altitude of 3,000 feet, the village once faced severe water shortages, particularly during summer, now with model of community led water conservation achieved the mile stones..
- Nearly 300 families came together to adopt rooftop rainwater harvesting systems, making the village largely self-sufficient.
- The initiative was facilitated by local leadership, including then BDO now known as ADM, Asit Kumar Das, who emphasised coordinated action and awareness.
- The PM also praised the implementation of solar mini-grids in Reang tribal villages like Karnaram Para, which has provided reliable electricity to remote areas under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana which lead solar revolution..
- Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha noted that the state’s functional tap water connection rate has surged from 3% in 2018 to approximately 86% in 2026
The Prime Minister used the example of Tripura to urge citizens to renew their commitment to water saving as summer begins. He noted that over the last 11 years, Nearly 50 lakh water harvesting structures have been created nationwide under the Jal Sanchay Abhiyan and Around 70,000 water bodies have been developed or restored under the Amrit Sarovar initiative..
Amrit Sarovar initiative:
The Mission Amrit Sarovar is a national water conservation initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 24, 2022, as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. Its primary goal is to address water scarcity in rural India by developing or rejuvenating at least 75 water bodies in every district , As of March 31, 2026 , the mission has significantly exceeded its original goals, with nearly 70,000 water bodies developed or rejuvenated across the country..
The mission integrates several central ministries (Rural Development, Jal Shakti, Panchayati Raj, etc.) and leverages existing funds from schemes like MGNREGA and the XV Finance Commission..
Beyond conservation, these sarovars are used for income-generating activities like fisheries, duckery and cultivation of water chestnuts which promoting livelihood also..
