Regulating action By GOI
- The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) and state regulators inspected 49 entities including online pharmacy warehouses, wholesalers, retail pharmacies and wellness/slimming clinics.
- Advisory strictly prohibits surrogate advertising and indirect promotion via social media influencers or disease awareness campaigns.
- These drugs are now strictly prescription only and must be prescribed by specialists such as endocrinologists, internal medicine experts and for specific conditions sucha as cardiologists.
- Violations regarding unauthorised sales or misleading marketing can lead to licence cancellations, heavy fines and criminal prosecution.
Reasons for the Crackdown:
- Demand has spiked for “cosmetic” weight loss driven by social media trends often without medical oversight.
- Unsupervised use can lead to severe side effects, including gallbladder stones, dehydration, protein malnutrition and pancreatitis.
- The entry of over 15 generic brands slashed prices by 50–70%, increasing the risk of “on-demand” availability through unregulated digital and retail channels
