E20 Fuel Mandate for Cleaner Mobility

 India has officially implemented a nationwide mandate requiring all petrol pumps to sell E20 fuel  which includes 20% ethanol & 80% petrol as the standard automotive fuel on 1st April 2026 , it was  directed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) and force a mandatory minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95 for all petrol sold across the country…

Important Updates :

1. E20 has replaced E10 and E5 as the only petrol option available at standard retail outlets…
2. The previous standard of 91 RON has been increased to 95 RON , aimed at improving engine performance and reducing “knocking” in modern high compression engines..
3. Government may allow limited, region specific exemptions under special circumstances for specified periods..
4.  Pure petrol (E0) remains available only as high performance branded fuels such as  IndianOil XP100/BPCL Speed 100 , at a significant premium, costing approximately ₹160/litre..

Recent Developments and Concerns with E20

1. Owners of older vehicles have reported mileage drops of 5% to 20% and sluggish acceleration.
2. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and the MoPNG have countered efficiency concerns, stating that 95 RON provides better acceleration and that the transition supports farmers with estimated annual payments of ₹40,000 crore.
3. The government clarified that using E20 fuel does not impact the validity of vehicle insurance. While some manufacturers warn of warranty risks for older cars, major bodies such as  SIAM suggest manufacturers will largely honour warranties.
4. With E20 now standard, discussions have already begun regarding a future shift toward E25 and E85 known as Flex-Fuel standards..
