Legislative Proposals of WRA
The government is set to introduce a package of three bills during a special three day Parliament sitting scheduled for 16–18 April 2026…
- Proposed to delink the reservation from the originally required post 2026 census and delimitation exercise.
- To enable redrawing constituency boundaries based on the 2011 Census data to accelerate the rollout.
- A separate bill to extend these provisions to Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir & Puducherry..
Proposed Structural Changes
- The proposal includes a uniform 50% increase in Lok sabha seats, raising the total strength from 543 to 816.
- Out of the expanded 816 seats, 273 seats (roughly one-third) would be strictly reserved for women.
- Total assembly seats nationwide would rise from 4,123 to approximately 6,186 with over 2,000 seats reserved for women.
- Reservation will include sub quotas for women within the Scheduled Caste (SC) & Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories.
Under the original 2023 law, the quota could have been delayed until 2034, as it was tied to a census yet to be conducted. By using the 2011 Census as a baseline, the government aims for the new laws to come into force by 31 March 2029, in time for the next general elections..
