The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has constituted a high-level Special Task Force (STF) to strengthen India’s agricultural resilience against global geopolitical uncertainties and climate volatility.

Key Strategic Initiatives
The STF outlined a multi-pronged framework focusing on outreach, resource efficiency & technology
- The flagship ‘Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav’ (MGMG) programme will be intensified, specifically targeting 100 Aspirational Districts to deliver tailored agricultural practice packages.
- A campaign will launch to promote balanced nutrient application and bio inputs. ICAR will conduct district wise assessments to rationalise fertilizer use for major crops like wheat and rice.
- Detailed mapping of millet-growing regions is underway. In low-productivity rice areas, the council is promoting high-value alternatives such as eco-fisheries integration.
- The task force is prioritizing Direct Seeding of Rice (DSR) to reduce water usage and labor costs. This is supported by real-time farmer advisories from a strengthened All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Meteorology.
- To ensure rapid execution, Nodal Officers have been designated to track progress weekly and coordinate actionable plans across priority areas.
The STF is designed as a dynamic body that will convene based on situational exigencies to provide data-driven policy recommendations to the Government of India.
