Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar and Mahatma Jyotirao Phule stand as towering figures in India’s struggle against caste oppression and social inequality, pioneering reforms that empowered the marginalized long before independence.

Early Lives and Challenges

Jyotirao Phule, born in 1827 in Pune into a Mali known as gardener family, faced caste discrimination early on despite his modest background. He attended a Scottish mission school, where exposure to Christian egalitarian ideas sparked his reformist zeal. Married to Savitribai, who became his lifelong partner in activism, Phule witnessed Brahminical dominance firsthand, fueling his critique of Hindu scriptures that perpetuated hierarchy.

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, born in 1891 in Mhow into a Mahar (Dalit) family, endured severe untouchability such as barred from classrooms and water sources during schooling. Yet, his brilliance earned scholarships to Elphinstone College, Columbia University (MA, PhD) & the London School of Economics (DSc, Bar-at-Law). Ambedkar’s academic prowess contrasted sharply with societal rejection, shaping his resolve for systemic change.

Key Contributions to Social Reform

  1. Phule’s revolutionary work began in 1848 when he and Savitribai opened India’s first school for girls in Pune, defying norms and facing stone-throwing mobs. He authored Gulamgiri (1873), exposing caste as a Brahmin invention to enslave Shudras and Ati-Shudras.
  2. Phule championed farmers’ rights via the Satyashodhak Samaj (1873), promoted widow remarriage, & advocated non-Brahmin representation in governance.
  3. His emphasis on education as emancipation “Without education, wisdom was lost; without wisdom, morals were lost” laid groundwork for Dalit upliftment.
  4. Ambedkar built on such foundations, leading the Mahad Satyagraha (1927) for Dalit water access and the Kalaram Temple entry (1930).
  5. He burned the Manusmriti in 1927, rejecting its caste sanctions, founded the Independent Labour Party (1936) and Scheduled Castes Federation (1942) & chaired the Constitution Drafting Committee.

The Indian Constitution’s abolition of untouchability (Article 17), reservations (Articles 15-16) & fundamental rights reflect his vision of liberty, equality & fraternity. In 1956, he embraced Buddhism with lakhs of followers, rejecting Hinduism’s inequities.

Shared Ideals and Influence

Both reformers viewed caste as a graded inequality, not mere division of labor. Phule called it “Brahmin slavery ” urging Shudra awakening through education and rationalism. Ambedkar, who revered Phule as a “guru “ echoed this in Annihilation of Caste (1936), arguing endogamy sustains hierarchy. Phule’s Satyashodhak Samaj inspired Ambedkar’s mass conversions and political mobilization. Together, they shifted focus from charity to rights, influencing Periyar and contemporary anti-caste movements

Enduring Legacy

  1. Phule died in 1890 but his ideas seeded non Brahmin politics in Maharashtra. Ambedkar passed in 1956, yet April 14 celebrate as his birth anniversary, is a national holiday & his statues dot India. Their combined efforts transformed education from privilege to right, ensuring marginalized voices endure in democracy.
  2. We can says that Phule ignited the spark of awareness, while Ambedkar forged it into constitutional steel , both architects of a just India, their fight against caste remains vital amid persistent inequalities.
