The Uttar Pradesh government has announced an interim minimum wage hike of up to 21% for unskilled, semi skilled & skilled workers, effective retrospectively from April 1, 2026, approved by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, follows massive and violent worker protests in Noida Phase 2 that occurred on Monday, April 13, 2026..
Reason of Protest :
- Thousands of factory workers in Noida’s industrial hub protested against low pay, rising living costs which is exacerbated by global conflicts & a significant pay gap compared to neighbouring Haryana, which recently implemented its own hike..
- The state government expressly rejected false claims circulating on social media that a uniform statewide minimum wage of ₹20,000 had been fixed.
- This is a temporary measure. The government plans to constitute a Wage Board next month to finalise a long-term structure after consulting with both labour unions and industry stakeholders.
- Authorities described the hike as a “balanced and practical” outcome intended to restore order after the protests turned violent, leading to nearly 350 arrests.
- The move aligns with the central government’s ongoing process to establish a national “floor wage” under new Labour Codes.
- Despite the announcement, some workers continued sit-in protests as of Tuesday morning at the Hosiery Complex in Noida Phase 2, with many feeling the increase is still insufficient to meet the soaring cost of living..
