The Indian government has officially set a target to establish at least one blood centre in every district by December 2026, This goal was reiterated during a national-level review of blood transfusion services conducted by the Union Health Ministry on April 22, 2026..
Current Status and Gaps In India
Approximately 10% of districts currently do not have a functional blood centre , Many existing centres are not yet connected to the eRaktKosh or Blood Bank Management System (BBMS), limiting real-time transparency, Significant gaps persist in remote and underserved regions, impacting timely access to safe blood ..
Several critical steps taken by GOI
The Ministry has outlined several critical steps to meet the 2026 deadline Such as

- Aiming for zero Transfusion-Transmitted Infections ( Zeo TTIs) such as HIV and Hepatitis through advanced testing like ELISA and CLIA-based screening …
- Ensuring all operational centres meet national licensing standards set by the CDSCO
- Moving away from replacement donors to a sustainable, voluntary-only model via awareness drives and college/workplace outreach
- Adopting ABDM-linked (Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission) biometric donor identification to enhance safety and tracking..
Strategic Implementation by GOI
- Hub-and-Spoke Model Will be use in such a ways like High-volume “hubs” will process blood, while smaller “spokes” and storage centres handle local distribution in remote areas..
- Regular Monitoring of Progress will be tracked through monthly and quarterly reviews involving the National Blood Transfusion Council (NBTC) and state agencie..
