The16th-century Telugu inscription was discovered on the north wall of the Sri Bugga Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple in Tadipatri, Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh , identified and deciphered by prominent historian MyNaa Swamy.

About Inscription

  1. It is carved on the exterior architecture of the Sri Bugga Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple, an architectural marvel built between 1490 and 1509 by Pemmasani Ramalinga Naidu, a chieftain under the Vijayanagara Empire ..
  2. The text is cleanly rendered in the historic Telugu script of the era.
  3. It documents a profound act of devotion /obeisance , dedicated specifically to the feet of the local presiding deity, referred to in the text as Sri Tatiparti Rameshwara Deva.
  4. The inscription explicitly identifies the devotee as Basavappa. It documents his lineage, noting him as the son of Satram Cheruvupalli Kalayya.
  5. It states that Basavappa travelled from Mahimaluru in Udayagiri Seema. he likely acted as a regional administrative or political representative for the Mahimaluru area.

Visual & Sculptural Accompaniments in inscription

  1. The base features an engraving of Basavappa alongside his wife standing in a humble anjali mudra known as devotional posture, next to a Sivalingam.
  2. An adjacent, smaller engraving names his wife as Naga Easwaramma. The text uses the phrasing “Basavappa Pendlamu Naga Easwaramma”.
  3. The explicit use of the word “Pendlamu” Which means wife , gives linguists direct evidence of the evolution and usage of the historic Rayalaseema dialect during the late medieval period

Historical Significances

  1. The text confirms that Tadipatri operated under the jurisdiction of Pennabadi Seema within the Gutti Kingdom, a vital territory of the later Vijayanagara Empire..
  2. Because Mahimaluru in Udayagiri Seema, sits roughly 220 kilometres away from Tadipatri, the inscription proves that the Bugga Ramalingeswara Swamy temple held vast regional reverence, pulling high-ranking devotees across major geopolitical borders..
