- India registered 34,878 cases against juveniles, marking an 11.2% increase compared to 31,365 cases in 2023.
- The juvenile crime rate that is incidents per lakh population, escalated from 7.1 to 7.9 within a single year.
- A total of 42,633 juveniles were apprehended nationwide…
- Out of those apprehended, 34,648 minors were booked under standard penal codes (IPC/BNS), while 7,985 fell under Special and Local Laws (SLL)..
Demographic & Socio-Economic Profiles
- Older adolescents in the 16 to 18 years bracket accounted for 77.7% (33,129 minors) of all apprehensions. Under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, minors in this specific bracket can undergo preliminary assessment to be tried as adults for heinous crimes..
- The vast majority (36,905 juveniles) were living with their parents, while 3,516 lived with guardians, and 2,216 were unhoused..
- Literacy patterns show 21,068 minors had an education level between primary and matriculation, 8,989 studied up to primary level, 8,301 advanced past matriculation, and 2,857 were completely illiterate.
Regional & Institutional Concerns
- Bihar registered the highest volume of juvenile crimes with 5,037 cases, representing a massive 177% spike from the previous year. Maharashtra (3,779 cases) & Madhya Pradesh (3,474 cases) followed closely..
- Delhi dominated urban statistics, accounting for 2,306 juvenile crime cases. Property crimes like theft almost 526 cases , were highly prevalent in the capital, alongside severe charges including 144 murders and 58 rapes involving minors..
- Independent studies like the India Justice Report concurrently point out that structural issues, such as understaffed Juvenile Justice Boards (JJBs), leave over 55% of national juvenile cases lingering in long legal pendency…
Crimes against children also increased 5.9% to 187,702 cases in 2024, dominated by kidnapping/abduction (40%) and POCSO (36.9%). This trend raises concerns amid public debates on juvenile justice reforms must be focus and its a serious concerns .
