Abujhmarh region, the remote village of Nelangur in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district has received functional household tap water connections for the first time as of April 12, 2026 ..

Nelangur is located roughly 52 km from the district headquarters and just 8 km from the Maharashtra border. For over 40 years, its rugged terrain and status as a “highly sensitive” zone made basic service delivery a monumental challenge.

The successful arrival of tap water is being cited by officials, including Narayanpur Collector Namrata Jain, as a symbol of building trust and restoring governance in the former Maoist stronghold.

it marks a significant turning point in integrating one of India’s most isolated areas into the developmental mainstream following the official declaration of the Bastar region as Naxal-free on March 31, 2026..

 Highlights of the Transformation

  1. Solar-Powered Infrastructure Implemented under the Jal Jeevan Mission, the system uses solar-powered pumps to lift water from sources and distribute it through pipelines directly to homes. This setup ensures a steady supply while bypassing the region’s unreliable conventional electricity grid.
  2.  For decades, residents primarily women trekked long distances through dense, hilly forests to fetch water from streams. Doorstep delivery has reportedly eased daily routines and significantly improved local hygiene standards.
  3.  The pace of development accelerated after the establishment of a joint ITBP and state police security camp in April 2025. This enabled further projects, including a regular bus service between Narayanpur and Nelangur under the Mukhyamantri Bus Seva scheme..

Importance of transformation

While tap water is a major milestone, villagers have expressed the need for additional infrastructure:

  1. Permanent school and hostel buildings to replace current temporary setups in houses and ghotuls.
  2. Expansion of the Public Distribution System (PDS) to the village.
  3. Reliable mobile network connectivity and grid electricit..
